Growing up and going to a school where a farm is located right next door is so much different from Sackett Elementary. Because of the big population in cities, I feel like these schools biggest concern is to get the students to the next grade even if they don’t know their material well. Before volunteering here I worked as a volunteer at a preschool near where I live and the students at this preschool knew their ABC’s and 123’s; when I came to this school I noticed a lot of the children have a hard time keeping up with the skills they should already have and they’re in kindergarten. I’m not saying the teachers aren’t doing their jobs right, but it concerns me because these kids should already know this. Maybe it’s because a lot of their parents speak a different language and it’s difficult for them to learn English, but they should be familiar with this material. It was a surprise to me to ask these kids what letter B was and they’d point to Q. When I taught preschool some of the kids were starting to read. The differences between these communities are very unalike, but that doesn’t mean one should be taught less than the other.
